As long as I only keep the product images shown using the VARGAL plugin without any images in the variation gallery, everything looks normal, i.e., images with different aspect ratios are displayed correctly:
When I add a single image or video to the variation gallery, all images get skewed – they are displayed using the same aspect ratio which distorts the images:
