How can I match tracking number by item SKU instead of Item ID?

We want to upload tracking numbers from our own developed ERP to Woocommerce store. When I read the docs, I can only find $item_id, but our ERP is running with item SKUs, and I was wondering if we could match the tracking number by item SKUs instead of item IDs.

Furthermore, could you provide a code template or an example? We want to upload tracking numbers for each item and mark order status as “Partially Shipped”, “Shipped” accordingly.
