Overriding a product and saving time (feature)

When I override a product, it goes back to the import list. There I must fix the title, the description, select the categories, fill the tags and select the images all over again. Could it be possible to use all this information from the old product? Sometimes the data is the same, except for the variations. I would save a lot of time if I could use the old information instead. The screen could show a checkbox to do that, which I would check and then import. Well, at least the categories and the tags could come already filled in such situation.
