Product list : Display type “Color” not vary the thumbnails

Hello,
When displayed alone on product list, the display type “Color” does not vary the thumbnails as the display type “Variation Image” does.

I know that a solution would be to display on product list also the other attributes but this is not desired for a branding reason.
