Display Conditions

Exactly how does the display condition work?

I apologize if this question has been asked, answered or is posted somewhere.
I missed it, or I just can’t find it.
Either way this is what I need to do for example:

Shop Page: Filter by product category
Category 1
Category 2

Upon selecting a category, it would then display a sub category/menu.
